Staff Sgt. John Gitau Mwangi, a soldier at Fort Hood, has recently been sentenced to 26 years in prison for the murder of his wife. According to KCENTV, Mwangi pleaded guilty on December 12. His wife, Esther Mwangi, was also a sergeant in the military, according to the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel.

Lieutenant Colonel William Wick stated, “A soldier, a mother, and a sister—Sergeant Esther—was tragically taken away by the accused’s reprehensible actions.” He added, “Though nothing we can do will bring back Esther, we can only hope that her family can begin to heal as a result of today’s proceedings.”
