Common to Read Ta-Nehisi Coates’ ‘Between the World and Me’ at the Apollo Theater
A longtime journalist, Coates' Between the World and Me earned him critical-acclaim and established him as one of the go-to thinkers on race relations of this era. Toni Morrison went as far as to say he filled the void left when James Baldwin died, and Coates went on to win the MacArthur 'Genius' Award. Between the World and Me also won The National Book Award.
Throughout his work, Coates, who grew up in Baltimore, makes it a point to mention how hip-hop impacted his thoughts and perspective. That said, it's not surprising at all that Common has been tapped to do a live reading of what is probably his most impactful work. Angela Bassett and This Is Us star, Susan Kelechi Watson, will also participate in the reading.
"In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me, offers a powerful framework for understanding our nation’s history, the idea of race, and current crisis," the site reads of the program.
Grammy-nominated jazz musician Jason Moran will contribute music to the program, and Kamilah Forbes, executive producer for the Apollo will helm the event, Okayplayer reports.
You can purchase tickets here. Common's reading will take place on April 2, with the event running through April 3.
