Juneteenth is definitely a part of the community here in Central Texas and Texas history. Juneteenth is a holiday that reflects on both bondage and freedom and is a federal holiday in the United States, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. On June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves happened in the city of Galveston and the holiday has forever been celebrated here.
