18% Increase in Assaults on Texas Teachers Raises Alarm
Teachers In Texas are one of the state's most important resources. They are tutoring the future generation of Texans and preparing them for their future lives. But, some educators in the state have expressed concerns after their safety has been put in danger.
Why Do Some Teachers In Texas Worry About Their Safety?
As revealed by KPRC, when they examined data from the past two years, something rather startling was revealed. Teachers getting attacked by students in Texas rose 18%, which translates 3,500 school workers being harmed. The data, to say the least, it troubling.
The Houston Federation of Teachers President, Jackie Anderson, said that this growth in assaults is a result in a lack of availability of resources helping with mental health care:
“Right after COVID, there has been an alarming pull from our classrooms by counselors, wraparound services, and people who would offer mental health services to our students...Students are not getting the supports they need. So I’m not surprised at all.”

What Are Teachers In Texas Doing To Try And Feel Safe In Classrooms?
Educators in Texas are very concerned in regards to the trend. One of the top problems though, is that details regarding what happened to the teacher are hard to obtain. Per Anderson:
“What shocks me the most is the lack of transparency—they won’t even put out the information so we know where to go from there...We have to have a baseline, and we can’t get that information.”
A potential answer for Lone Star State teachers getting harmed by a student would be something known as "assault leave." This would give a teacher a chance in Texas to take time off to recover. But, Texas school districts could reject the time off following inquiries, which would result in a teacher needing to use personal time off to recover.
Hopefully soon, an answer can be found to keep Texas teachers safe and sound in the classroom.
