Monday morning came early for the 30 or so Temple firefighters who responded to an apartment fire at The District at 21 Fourteen Apartments on 5th street.

Thomas Pechal with Temple Fire and Rescue reports that the original call came in about 12:19 am. One engine company arrived at the apartment complex to find a mattress on fire outside of the building that had just been put out.

They did a check on the building and found smoke coming from an upstairs apartment. Residents were evacuated safely to a campus building across the street and the call was upgraded to a structure fire.

11 units and 30 personnel responded in total, and South 5th Street was closed off to traffic for a while as the fire was put out. 8 residents from 4 apartments are now being cared for by the American Red Cross. The fire was determined to be under control by 1:19 am. The last unit left the scene just after 3 am.
