Austin Jail Scandal: Corrections Officer Fired, Charged Over Chicken Wing Bribe

According to FOX 7, greed got the best of a corrections officer in Travis County. The officer was fired and charged with allegedly providing chicken wings to an inmate for money. Amos Nyanway, a 25-year-old corrections officer, now faces a Class B misdemeanor charge for contraband in a correctional facility.

I've heard of some dumb decisions, but this one definitely shocked me, especially knowing that Amos was a corrections officer; he should have known better, and there's really no excuse.

It was August 21st when the Security Threat Intelligence Unit (STIU) began investigating an unrelated matter and realized that Nyanway could have possibly been providing information to inmates. Travis County stated it was wings that were contraband and that "led us to win." An investigation immediately took place, and Nyanway was placed on administrative duty during the process.

On October 14th, Amos was finally fired and booked into jail. He had been with the office since June. Amos could possibly be looking at up to six months in jail or a fine of up to $2,000, as this is a Class B misdemeanor in the state of Texas.

Sheriff Sally Hernandez made a statement, saying, "I'm disappointed that a Travis County Sheriff's Office corrections officer made such a foolish decision. We hold our employees to a high standard of conduct and accountability. We simply cannot tolerate contraband of any type being brought into our secure facility."
