In the jungle, the mighty box office jungle, the lion doesn’t sleep tonight. It eats the competition. That’s what lions do! (They didn’t become kings of the jungle by being extremely nice to everyone. Let’s get real here.)

You had to figure The Lion King was going to be a hit, but the film shattered most expectations at the box office last weekend. It grossed an estimated $185 million, making it the biggest movie ever to debut in the month of July. Here’s how it stacks up against some of the other biggest July movies:

  1. The Lion King - $185 million
  2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 - $169.1 million
  3. The Dark Knight Rises - $160.8 million
  4. The Dark Knight - $158.4 million
  5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest - $135.6 million

The Lion King’s Friday ($78.5 million) was the 10th biggest opening day in box-office history. And $185 million for Friday to Sunday also makes it the ninth biggest opening weekend for any movie ever, putting it just behind Avengers: Age of Ultron and just ahead of Incredibles 2. You may note both of those are Disney movies, too. And this is the same weekend that Avengers: Endgame passed Avatar to become the biggest movie of all time. Basically it’s Disney’s world now, we’re just watching movies in it.
