If child safety is something you care for, then you might want to come out to Temple this weekend.

When I was a kid, I would volunteer to go door-to-door for charity collection. If I recall correctly it was the M.D.A Telethon. Then we would go to the local T.V station and turn the money into the news anchor. They'd film it and play it back when they could. That news anchor was later arrested and sent to prison for having, and creating, child porn.

Now, I'm not egotistical enough to think that it was my fine child self that sent him over to the dark side. if anything, I might be one of the few that didn't tweak his fancy.

To get to the point. Yes, Margaret, there are a lot of "creepers" out there. Parents should do everything they can to protect your kids. The Temple Police want to help you help the kids.

This Saturday they'll be at the Temple Walmart on West Adams from Noon until 3 p.m. to pass out free Child I.D. Cards. You can see an example card below.

Temple PD spokesman Cody Weems tells us the cards contain a photo of the child, fingerprints, and parent contact information. They can be used to help reunite lost children with their parents.

Two great examples for the use of the I.D. care they gave are:

  • A parent can keep the card and present it to law enforcement to help identify a missing child.
  • The child could also carry the card so that he has his parents' contact information in the event that they get separated.

This service is offered for children ages 3-15. If you've done this already, check the card. Kids grow at a fast pace. If the card is out of date, then come to the Walmart on Adams in Temple this Saturday between Noon and 3 p.m.
