Nearly two months since the death of their 10-year-old daughter, John Crawsen and Laci Avant sat down for their first interview with our news partners KWTX.

Lily Mae Avant, a 10-year-old Valley Mills Elementary School student, died after a nine-day battle against a brain-eating amoeba she contracted while swimming in the Brazos River and Lake Whitney over Labor Day weekend.

Her mother and step-father told John Carroll that the pain hasn't gone away. "It hurts every day. It's just emptiness and it doesn't let up and it doesn't get better," said Laci Avant, the girl's mother.

Both Laci and John's faith has been shaken. "After (God) took her, really, I didn't talk to Him. I was mad and I just said, 'I'm not talking to Him right now,'" Laci said.

"I'm still mad at (God). Maybe it will go away. I mean, I respect when everybody else is praying, but I just don't have anything to say to (God) yet," said Crawsen.

Since the interview, Laci has said she is ready to speak to God.
