Ne-Yo Addresses Backlash of 'Atlanta Exes'

Perfect beings don't exist in Ne-Yo's world. He speaks from experience. The singer's highly publicized split from ex-fiancee, Monyetta Shaw, is proof of that. After she learned of his cheating ways, their relationship was put under a magnifying glass for the world to see when she joined the cast of VH1's 'Atlanta Exes.'

Ne-Yo, aware of his tarnished image as a cheater, realized the show would focus on the negative rather than his other endearing qualities. "I knew that there was gonna be some backlash from people," he tells The Boombox. "I knew that once they got to know Monyetta, and just see how dope of a person she is, of course I knew it was gonna come back at me."

He has no issue admitting his faults, but Ne-Yo, whose 'Non-Fiction' album arrives Nov. 11, feels he isn't the only one to blame. "Everybody grows from somewhere. Mistakes were made in the relationship on both sides," he shares. "I'll say I made more mistakes than she did. But it is what it is. This is what happens in relationships."

On the reality show, Shaw revealed that she got her tubes tied during her relationship with the 'She Knows' crooner. They chose to make the decision as a family after having two children together. Now, as a result of that joint choice, she can no longer conceive with a new partner.

"I think the thing that got people in the biggest uproar was the whole getting tubes tied situation. Let me clear up one thing. I did not make her get her tubes tied," Ne-Yo says. "Anybody knows me knows I don't impose my will on anybody. We decided together that we didn't want anymore children. So she got her tubes tied. It was a mutual situation."

The Grammy winner, born Shaffer Smith, has been hit hard on social media -- from Twitter to Instagram -- with critics bashing him for his infidelity and those tube-tying rumors. When it comes to 'Atlanta Exes,' which just completed its first season, Ne-Yo isn't too surprised of how everything played out. "People are gonna have their opinions. That's kinda what social media is built on. It's reality TV. It's designed and produced to get a certain response from people. I get it," he discloses. "I'm completely understanding of what it is. It is what it is."
