The Killeen Independent School District  Nutrition Department was named the winner of the "Best of Bunch” Award from the Texas Department of Agriculture for accepting Texas Ag Commissioner Sid Miller's 'Farm Fresh Initiative'.

TEACHING OUR KIDS THE IMPORTANCE OF AGRICULTURE

The idea was to offer as many locally sourced foods as possible on student menus, and to provide garden-based learning activities to teach children about the importance of agriculture.

Texas is a growing state for sure, but we're still very much an agricultural state, so this is just part of our culture.

Teaching kids about the important role our farmers and ranchers play in everyone's lives can help them have a deeper appreciation for how much effort goes into growing and making their food.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCE

Killeen ISD was one of 150 Texas school districts to participate in this challenge, and the award shows that the district really poured their hearts into it.

“This challenge required the participation of the entire district in serving local foods on our school menus," School Nutrition Coordinator Stephanie Russom, RD said. "This is an exciting award for our team!”

FEEDING THE FUTURE

Whether our kids go into agricultural or not, knowing where their food comes from and how to get the most nutrition from it is one of those invaluable lessons and skills we want them to be learning in our schools.

Thanks to KISD for their effort on this one.
