Janelle Monae delivered an empowering speech to graduates at the 2017 Dillard University Commencement in New Orleans on Saturday (May 13).

The R&B singer gave the 116 graduates in attendance the three keys to success. "No. 1, the importance of being gracious. No. 2, the importance of being proud. No. 3, the importance of choosing freedom over fear," she said according to NOLA.com.

In addition, Monae also received an honorary degree from the school. After she was hooded, she declared that Dr. Robinson would be her legal name. “I never thought that I would see the day...when I would be getting an honorary degree,” she said.

Among the graduates who donned a cap and gown included a 63-year-old grandmother and a woman who lost both hands and feet during the course of attaining her degree. It goes to show that if you really want it, don't let anything get in your way of achieving your dreams.

Props to the graduates of Dillard University for earning their degrees, as well as Janelle Monae for delivering her black girl magic to the grads.
