We're barely halfway through the year & already Texas has seen not 1 but 2 MASSIVE earthquakes; both of them have already been ranked in the top 10 of the strongest earthquakes in the state's history.

July 2024 was a HUGE month for earthquakes in Texas

On Monday, July 23, Rotan, Texas (just outside of Lubbock, San Angelo & Abilene) saw a 4.9 magnitude earthquake. Just a few days later, Friday,  July 26, an even bigger earthquake struck Scurry County, Texas; a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit Friday morning.

In the last few years, Texas HAS seen an increase in earthquake activity:

  • a 5.2 earthquake hit Mentone, Texas on Nov. 8, 2023 (and even stronger 5.4 earthquake hit the same spot on November 16, 2022)
  • and a 5.4 earthquake hit Midland, Texas on Dec. 16, 2022.

Considering these were both around the same area, people are thinking there might be more earthquakes to affect these areas in the very near future...

Has an earthquake actually killed anyone in Texas?

The thing to be most thankful is that no one was killed from the earthquakes in the last 3 years; however, it HAS happened once before. On March 7, 1923, an 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit West Texas & an adobe house collapsed in Juarez, Mexico. A man died from suffocation caused by the collapse, making it the ONLY fatality due to an earthquake in Texas. Not even the biggest earthquake, the 6.5 earthquake that hit Valentine, Texas on Aug 16, 1931 was THAT bad...

Will Texas see more of these massive earthquakes? Judging by the patterns of seeing at least 2 of these big ones in the same month, and ones we've had in 2022 & 2023, I'd say yes. It's only a matter of time of not "if", but "when" the next big one will strike in Texas.
