Texas’ Smallest High School Has An Enrollment In The Single Digits

I used to always think my former high school in Texas was small, but as it turns out, it was pretty midsized.

It was one of those places where you knew everyone in your high school class, along with the upper and lower classes, but you didn't all necessarily talk. The same thing applied to the small town of Brownsboro, TX where it was located.

There were probably around 700 students, give or take, enrolled in Brownsboro High School. We did have lots of extracurriculars -- football, basketball, softball, track, drill team, band, agriculture, and many more. I later learned that when compared to schools that are actually small, this is a lot.

Just imagine, me thinking I went to a very small, country school with a full football team, only to realize that some schools have 6 man football teams and total enrollments in the double digits.

So what is the smallest high school in Texas?

To be honest, I was expecting the state's smallest high school to have an enrollment in the high teens to low twenties, but I was very wrong.

Turns out, Texas' smallest school is only in the single digits with an enrollment of 6, according to the UIL Reclassification and Realignment 2024-2026. The high school is a part of Valentine ISD, which itself only had 35 students enrolled in the district according to 2021-2022 stats from The Texas Monthly. 

Now THAT is a small school. It makes me, and I'm sure many others, rethink what they thought a small high school was...

In comparison, Texas' largest high school, Allen, has an enrollment of 6,947. That's a little more than 1,157 times larger than Valentine High School!

Where even is Valentine High School?

Texas' smallest high school is located in Valentine, Texas, a town with a population of 69 according to 2022 data. It's located in West Texas, not too far from Marfa.

The Valentine school actually not only houses the high school but all grade levels in the district.

I don't know about you, but learning this makes me kind of glad I went to high school where I did. I have no doubt some people love the lifestyle of an extremely small town and school, I'm just not one of them.
