Waco Animal Shelter Lowers Volunteer Age Limit to Combat Summer Slump
Summertime is vacation time, but the furry babies at Pet Circle Animal Shelter in Waco need help year-round. The arrival of the summer season brings a challenging operational shift for the animal shelter. Summer typically sees more rescued animals coming through the doors, but at the same time volunteer numbers drop due to people taking vacations. In a direct move to counter this deficit, shelter leadership has officially lowered its age threshold for community volunteers.
Teenage Volunteers Needed
Under the newly updated operational guidelines, 16- and 17-year-old teenagers can now volunteer while those 15 and younger can volunteer in shelter activities if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Navigating the Seasonal Workforce Deficit
Pet Circle Marketing and Communication Director Windy Leal tells Fox 44 that the decision to revamp the age policy just made sense. Baylor University volunteers go home during the summer, which for many is out of town or out of state. Local kids have tons of free time in the summer, so what better way to have fun while making a difference in a furry baby’s life that is looking for a forever home. Wendy says sometimes there are as many as 200 dogs at the shelter, so extra help is needed.

Flexible Tasks
The daily responsibilities for incoming volunteers vary widely based on individual schedules and preferences, with shift times ranging from quick 20-minute tasks to full afternoon commitments. Essential duties span from operational support like doing laundry and washing food dishes, to direct animal enrichment, including exercise walks and socialization time.
Bark Breaks
For those looking to offer a deeper level of temporary care, the shelter offers an off-site program known as a "bark break." This initiative allows community members to check out a dog for an entire afternoon to explore municipal parks, enjoy treats like "pup cups," and have some away from the high-stress environment of the kennel rows. Waco residents interested in joining the updated summer volunteer program can access application portals and training schedules directly through the Pet Circle website.
