Recent Data Reveals Startling Rise Of Suicides In Texas Jails

Data revealed by the Texas Justice Initiative has shown a worrying trend in the state's detention centers. Here's what is known at the time of writing.

Brooklyn Hogrell's Suicide, And Subsequent Question Raised

As revealed by The Austin Chronicle, the mother of Brooklyn Hogrell, Jennifer Rodriguez, was concerned about her daughter's well being while she was in prison. Per Rodriguez, Hogrell battled issues with depression while in Texas jail. Rodriguez learned of the problems from Hogrell herself via calls from her a tablet issued to her from the jail.

Rodriguez stated to The Austin Chronicle that Hogrell stated: "Mom, it’s just so hard in here because the officers are so rude and the other inmates are always talking crap." Rodriguez encouraged her to simply to attempt to avoid any conflict.

Following the taking Hogrell's tablet due the breaking of rule, Hogrell would received printed out texts from Rodriguez which encouraged her. Sadly on April 17, 2024. Rodriguez learned that Hogrell attempted to take her own life, and then on April 21st, Hogrell passed due to suicide.

Data Collected Shows Increase In Texas Inmate Suicides

The Austin Chronicle reports that findings from the Texas Justice Initiative shows a growth of inmates taking their own life. Through the years of 2005-2019, the rate was 28.6. The rate in 2020-2023 increased to 56, which was doubled. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice requires that correctional officers make rounds every 30 minutes to monitor inmates.

The TDCJ stated in regards to Hogrell's passing:

“An investigation into the incident revealed that staff did conduct their 30-minute rounds during this incident and operated within policy.”

Currently at the time of writing, TJI has confirmed 12 inmate suicides in 2024. As this is a developing story, we will have more information when it becomes available.
