Fort Hood veterinarians need clinical training, and the City of Killeen needs medical care for its shelter animals. Problem solved!

Killeen Animal Services and Fort Hood To Partner in Animal Health Care

The City of Killeen Animal Services officially renews an agreement with Fort Hood to enhance veterinary care for local shelter animals while supporting military medical training. The one-year Memorandum of Understanding, enacted between the municipal shelter and the 43rd Medical Detachment (Veterinary Service Support), establishes a hands-on program that pairs military veterinary personnel with animals awaiting adoption.

An Opportunity To Help Furry Babies Find Forever Homes

Each year, Killeen Animal Services handles roughly 6,000 animals and facilitates thousands of adoptions. Under this continued partnership, Fort Hood veterinarians and enlisted veterinary technicians will conduct routine health examinations, administer essential medical treatments, and perform needed surgical procedures on shelter pets. This arrangement allows the animals to receive critical medical attention more rapidly, accelerating their readiness for permanent homes.

Supporting Shelter Operations

During fiscal year 2025, Killeen Animal Services completed approximately 237 spay and neuter surgeries for resident dogs and cats. Integrating military veterinary professionals into daily operations substantially increases the shelter's surgical capacity.

Putting the Money Where It Is Needed Most

For whatever reason, it is difficult to find veterinarians in Texas who will spend time working with shelter animals. When they "are" found, it is pricey to procure their services. The city tells Fox 44 that this partnership will reduce expenditures on third-party veterinary contracts. Funds saved through the agreement will be directly reinvested into general shelter operations, facility upgrades, and daily pet care.

Joint Oversight and Program Evaluation

Killeen Animal Services retains primary administrative oversight of all medical procedures conducted at the facility, working in close coordination with leadership from the 43rd Medical Detachment.
