The Death Rate Drops to Pre-Pandemic Levels

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the rate at which Americans died in 2024 was below pre-pandemic levels at 3.1 million deaths. Making up the majority of the deaths at 40% were cancer and heart disease.

Covid Deaths are Down Nationwide

For the first time since Covid 19 appeared in 2019, it is not listed in the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States. It is difficult to arrive at an exact number of deaths resulting from Covid 19 since many of those who died during the pandemic suffered from other health issues at the time of death.

Leading Causes of Death in the United States in 2024

Statistics show that the leading cause of death in the United States in 2024 was heart disease at 683,037 deaths, followed by cancer at 619, 812 and unintentional injuries /fatalities at 194,488.

Unintentional Deaths in the United States

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 39,345 people died in traffic crashes in 2024 with an estimated 284.6 million registered motor vehicles on the nation’s highways. Firearm deaths and injuries nationwide dropped for a third straight year to around 44,000. Excluding suicides, 16, 576 firearm deaths were reported in 2024. It is estimated that there are over 500 million civilian owned firearms in the United States.
