The sky over Dalhart, Texas, was looking pretty gross, and the temperature sat at 35°F—not cold enough for snow, but just right for something nastier. A mix of rain and ice was coming down, and as any storm chaser will tell you, that’s when things get tricky.

Imagine gripping the wheel with knuckles turning white, windshield wipers on overdrive, and visibility dropping to almost nothing as ice pellets smack the windshield. This isn’t the kind of weather you dream of chasing.

But there’s no turning back now, not for someone whose job is to get up close and personal with Mother Nature, no matter how bad she’s feeling.

If you have ever driven in conditions like this, you know vvery few minutes, the rain can morph into harder, icy pellets, creating an obstacle course of slick roads and surprise patches of ice. For this storm chaser, the challenge was not just keeping up with the storm—it was staying on the road. As the freezing rain beat down, even the road looked unpredictable, and the car probably wasn’t exactly thrilled about it either.
