If you go to Google Maps and look for the Darrouzett Cemetery, you'll find yourself looking at an overhead image of a small town cemetery in the far northern Texas panhandle. As you look at the image, you'll notice strange marks that seem to cut through the little cemetery. It looks like giant claw marks, or something along those lines.

Here's the surprising true story behind the weird marks in the small Texas cemetery.

It's a small rural community with a 9 hole golf course, a repurposed theater, and a park they're very proud of. This all per their own website which has a fantastic FAQ section. In fact, it's one of the few FAQs that I've seen that actually answers some reasonable questions.

Well done.

This town is the backdrop for the cemetery with the strange markings you can see from overhead.

According the city's website, settlers began traveling through the area in the late 1800s into the early 1900s. The area provided an excellent spot for camping thanks to the two creeks that meet nearby.

This helps lend credence to a story that was shared on social media regarding the marks. According to them, the marks are actually ruts left by wagons traveling on the trail from Beaver, Oklahoma to Higgins, Texas.

According to them, the trail was in use from the late 1800s, until the early 1900s. Checks out. It wasn't until 1917 that the town of Darrouzett would get its start.

It's pretty incredible to think that what you are seeing is a trace left by early settlers in the area, one that predates the cemetery its found in.
