Did you enjoy our nice warm Christmas in Central Texas? I hope so, because, as usual, our weather is about to go in a different direction for the new year.

Starting the New Year With Freezing Temps

Our news partner KWTX is reporting that big changes are on the way for 2022. While midnight temperatures to kick off the New Year are expected to be in the upper 60s, on Saturday afternoon it will start getting colder. By Sunday morning, temps will be below freezing, in the 20-degree range.

Time to Ready the Roads

According to KCEN, Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews will prep  I-35, I-14, State Highway 6, and U.S. Highway 84 with a brine solution beginning Thursday morning. This should get Central Texas highways ready for the upcoming freezing temperatures, and hopefully prevent weather-related accidents.

Give TxDOT Trucks a Wide Berth

TxDOT is asking travelers to give maintenance vehicles at least 200 feet of space as they treat roadways. As the wintry weather approaches Texas, residents are urged to avoid unnecessary trips.

Consider These TxDOT Tips

Things to remember from TxDOT if you need to travel:

-Buckle up!
-Drive and adjust your speed to conditions
-Increase following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you
-Use extra caution on bridges, overpasses, ramps, turns and shaded areas
-Do not use cruise control or lane assist feature

If you must get on the road, you can also check your route in advance at drivetexas.org, a website that gives the real-time status of highways all over Texas.

This site lets you plan ahead by letting you know if there are accidents, construction, closures, or damage involving the roads you will be driving on during your trip.

You can also call 1-800-452-9292 for road conditions in Texas as well.
