We've all heard the saying before: one man's trash is another man's treasure. Consider the past time of dumpster diving. Texas as a whole has to be a popular state for this activity. Just think of all the dumpsters at the mall, shopping centers, and office buildings. That's a whole bunch of diving to do.

So, what's the word? Will you get into trouble with the law for going through someone else's trash receptacles? While dumpster diving is permitted on public property in most Texas cities, you must obey the state's trespassing laws as well as all ordinances and statutes. That can make the situation kind of confusing.

A report at Moneyworths warns dumpster diving can sometimes involve intruding on private property. Taking anything from private property (both businesses and residences) - even out of a trash receptacle - is punishable by law. If you are asked to stop but continue the activity, you can be arrested. This is especially true if you try collecting from an area clearly marked with a "No Trespassing" sign.

This also goes for areas in which you have to open doors or a gate to gain entry. These areas should definitely be avoided. Wherever you are, make sure you have all the necessary permissions and permits to be there.

Hidden gems are out there for the taking - yes, even in the actual trash - but proceed with caution, especially in regard to private property.
