Chuck D is one of hip-hop's most formidable minds and recognizable voices. The Public Enemy frontman is 57 years old today (August 1.)

Chuck and P.E. first came to the fore 30 years ago with their classic debut, Yo! Bum Rush the Show. Chuck, Terminator X, Professor Griff and Flavor Flav would become hip-hop superstars with the platinum-selling success of albums like It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Fear of A Black Planet and Apocalypse 91: The Enemy Strikes Black.

Chuck D has been one of the more astute political commentators in hip-hop, lending his voice to causes and using his musical platform for critique for the better part of three decades. He released his first solo album, Autobiography of Mistachuck, in 1996 and in 2006, Chuck formed Prophets of Rage with members of Cypress Hill and Rage Against the Machine.

None of that has ever taken away from his "day job," however. Public Enemy dropped their fourteenth studio album, Man Plans God Laughs in June 2017.
