Investigators have deemed a Thursday night fire at Belton's Leon Heights Elementary School suspicious.

In a news release, Paul Romer with the City of Belton said Fire Marshal Jeff Booker conducted an inspection of the school Friday with assistance from a state fire marshal and Belton Police. They determined that the fire was confined to a small area in the main hallway near the school's administration office. Damage was limited to a door, skylight structure, and ceiling tiles.

No details about the fire marshals' ruling had been released as of the publication of this article.

According to Romer, the Belton Fire Department was dispatched to the school at 8:44 PM Thursday. When they arrived, flames were visible on the roof. BISD's Elizabeth Cox reported Thursday evening that the flames were quickly extinguished. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

In order to keep the building vacant and allow fire marshals to inspect it, Leon Heights students held classes at the Belton ISD Wall Street Auditorium and Administration Building at 400 North Wall Street Friday.
