UPDATE: ABC News and the Associated Press report that suspect Dylan Woodburn is dead.

According to their report, Woodburn was momentarily detained by two people inside the coffee shop where he initially began attacking people Friday. When an officer tried to handcuff Woodburn, his duty belt somehow came undone, which gave Woodburn an opportunity to escape.

Police say Woodburn then ran into a nearby Freebirds restaurant, where he fatally stabbed the kitchen manager before going to the roof of the business and jumping off head-first.

Woodburn was hospitalized, but passed away Friday night.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley says the department is investigating the failed officer's equipment, and says all equipment is inspected and held to high standards.

KXAN reports that the suspect in last week's deadly Austin stabbing has been identified as 27-year old Dylan Woodburn.

Woodburn went on a stabbing spree for "No apparent reason" Friday, December 3rd. He first stabbed someone in Bennu Coffee on South Congress Avenue, before going to nearby Freebirds World Burrito and stabbing two more.

One of his victims, 34-year-old kitchen manager at Freebirds Johnathan Aguilar died.

Woodburn has a previous criminal record in both Austin and Harris County. The mugshot used is from a September 2019 arrest related to burglarizing a fire station. Woodburn was accused of stealing an Austin Fire Department radio and a firefighter’s shoes.

The Austin Police Department is expected to release more details on the year's first murder soon.
