"Howdy Folks"

Robert 'Bob' Boykin the current voice of Big Tex at the State Fair of Texas, passed away on January 23rd at the age of 73.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Boykin, a former Marine, had been a part of the fair team since the end of 2012.

The fair released a statement on February 10th revealing Boykin's name and his death. The voice of Big Tex is always kept a secret. I guess it adds to the mystique.

This is some serious stuff. The last guy to do the voice, Bill Bragg, did the job from 2002 to 2012 was fired after he was identified as “Bill Bragg, the voice of Big Tex” during a charity event. Like, it was probably an event for hungry children and the fair folks busted the doors down and yelled, "You're fired".

Boykin would push the limit a bit and would walk the fairgrounds and talk to attendees. “so you may have spoken with the man himself,” says a statement from the State Fair of Texas.

Bob did some voice work before and almost didn't audition for the voice of Big Tex. He submitted his tape just a couple hours before the deadline.

The search for a new voice will begin soon, but the State Fair has not released any details.
