Many Americans are facing unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but one major retailer is bringing hope to those who need work.

According to a press release from Amazon, the company plans to build a new 625,000 square-foot fulfillment center that will employ over 700 people with full-time jobs to West Texas.

“We’re excited to be growing our operations in West Texas and look forward to building out our network in El Paso,” said Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment. “We’re grateful for the strong support we’ve received from local and state leaders and we look forward to creating over 700 full-time jobs for the El Paso community, with industry leading pay and comprehensive benefits starting on day one.”

The new site will pack and ship merchandise like games, books, toys, and electronics. Plus Amazon offers amazing benefits and the starting pay is $15/hr. The company is aiming to finish construction by 2021, so the hiring process should begin soon. The center has already began construction on Interstate 10 and Eastlake Boulevard in far East El Paso County.

"Creating new and better opportunities for El Pasoans is my passion. Now more than ever, it's essential our community proactively pursue and recruit great companies like Amazon,” said El Paso County Judge Ricardo A. Samaniego.

As we reported last week, Amazon also plans to open a 820,000 square foot fulfillment center in Pflugerville that is expected to generate about 1,000 full-time jobs. That facility is expected to be completed next year.
