A mom in Virginia now faces child abuse charges after police say she left two children in a hot car with the windows up for over an hour while turning herself in to police for the same crime.

25-year-old Laquanda Newby of Henrico Virginia was accused of leaving a child alone in a car on May 26 while she was shopping in a nearby Sam's Club. By the time police arrived, Newby had returned to her car, and officers couldn't arrest her because they didn't witness the reported crime. Instead, an officer swore out a warrant in exchange for a promise that Newby would turn herself in.

Newby showed up to court Monday, June 15 to do just that, but she wasn't alone. She brought two children - ages 1 and 6 - and left them alone in a car with the windows up while she was in the courthouse. Temperatures peaked in the 90s, and surveillance footage revealed that the children were in the car for over an hour.

Things could have taken a tragic turn if someone hadn't reported the children to authorities.

Newby was booked into the Henrico County Jail and charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency or abuse of a child. She was later denied bond. The kids are now in their father's custody.
