Police were called to Travis Science Academy in Temple Thursday after reports of a student carrying a gun that turned out to be a toy.

A Temple PD resource officer assigned to the campus at 1500 S. 19th Street received a report of a student in possession of a handgun shortly before 8:30 a.m. Witnesses said they had seen the gun in the waistband of the student’s pants, and that he had made threats.

When officers found the student inside the school, he attempted to flee. He was quickly detained and officers found what appeared to be a small caliber handgun from his waistband. Officers determined that the gun was an air-soft pellet gun, but that it had neither an orange safety tip, nor any other indicators that it was a toy and not a real weapon.

The student was removed from campus and his case referred to the juvenile prosecutor’s office. The nature of the threats he reportedly made remain under investigation.
