Police in Temple are investigating after a shooting at an apartment building early Monday morning.

Officers responded to the Wayman Manor Apartment complex at 1811 E. Avenue K shortly after 4:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found an obvious crime scene, but no one was present. They eventually made contact with the caller who reported the crime and gained access to the apartment where the shooting took place.

According to the witness, two men knocked on the door of the apartment and forced their way in when the caller answered. The suspects then allegedly went to a back bedroom and got into a physical altercation with a man who had been sleeping inside. 4 gunshots were reportedly fired during the fight.

The caller told police the suspects fled the scene after the shots were fired. The man in the bedroom fled shortly thereafter and was later found at Scott and White Hospital undergoing treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

At 4:38 a.m., officers responded to the 400 block of E. French Avenue after receiving a report of another shooting victim. When they arrived, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the hand. The man told police he was walking in a field between Wayman Manor and Meredith-Dunbar Elementary when he was shot by someone. He later admitted to being involved in the incident at Waymon Manor, and said he was shot during the struggle between the victim and another suspect in the bedroom of the previous crime scene. He was taken to Scott and White for treatment.

Police say these incidents remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Temple Police Department at 254-298-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-729-TIPS or (254) 526-TIPS.
