We now know the name of a man who barricaded himself inside a home in Temple for hours over the weekend and refused to negotiate with police, prompting an encounter with SWAT officers.

The Bell County District Attorney's Office has charged 35-year-old Jerry Berry of Temple with burglary of a habitation with intent to commit assault, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm. In a media release, Temple Officer Shawana Neely said further charges may be pending.

As of Monday afternoon, Bell County Jail records did not indicate a bond total.

Police say Berry fled from officers who tried to question him in connection to a report of shots fired in the 600 block of South 7th Street around 9:30 PM Saturday. While fleeing, he reportedly turned and began firing at the officers, who returned fire.

Berry reportedly forced his way into a home in the 700 block of S. 15th St. and barricaded himself inside while the homeowner was still there. Fortunately, the homeowner was able to escape through a window.

Officers tried for hours to make contact with Berry, who remained silent. When he didn't respond to non-lethal projectiles or further attempts to negotiate, Temple SWAT officers entered the home and found him in the attic. Gunfire was exchanged, and Berry was injured. No other injuries were reported.

Neely said Berry was still being treated for the gunshot wound Monday.
