Temple police used a beanbag gun to subdue a suicidal suspect Saturday evening.

42-year-old Christopher Brown held a gun to his head for three and a half hours after police responded to a report of a domestic dispute at The Bridge Apartments, 404 Fryer’s Creek, shortly after 9 p.m. Officers were negotiating with Brown when they noticed he was becoming fatigued from holding the gun, breathing heavily, and speaking quietly. Brown then pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire. Police then deployed non-lethal rounds to stun him and take him into custody.

It was later determined that the gun was loaded, but Brown had failed to chamber a live round.

The standoff occurred after police responded to reports of a woman running door to door through the complex saying a man was threatening to kill her. The woman told officers she was visiting Brown when an argument between the two escalated into violence. Brown reportedly choked the woman before throwing her into a piece of furniture, then grabbed a gun and threatened to kill them both.

As the woman was speaking to police, another set of officers came across Brown sitting on a curb in the parking lot. Negotiators were called to the scene after officers were unable to persuade Brown to hand over the weapon.

Mr. Brown remained in the Bell County Jail Monday pending arraignment. He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
