A suspect is in custody after police say he hijacked an ambulance with paramedics and a patient inside while fleeing from police.

28-year-old Rashard Williams reportedly stole the Austin-Travis County EMS vehicle while it was parked outside of Austin's Resource Center for the Homeless.

According to KXAN-TV, a medic team was treating a patient in the vehicle when Williams used it to flee from police. Medics communicated with police and other ambulances via radio throughout the chase.

Williams eventually abandoned the vehicle in South Austin and fled on foot. Medics were able to place their patient on another ambulance for transportation to a hospital, and no injuries were reported.

Williams was arrested Tuesday in an unrelated incident, and police were able to identify him as the suspect in the hijacking. Records indicate he was in the Travis County Jail on charges of theft of property equal or greater than $150,000 and less than $300,000 and public intoxication. As of Wednesday, he was being held in lieu of $30,000 bond.

The incident was the second ambulance theft out of Austin in less than a month. Four weeks ago, 43-year-old David Oliver III of San Antonio was charged with evading arrest after allegedly stealing an ambulance outside an Austin hospital and leading police on a chase that ended behind Killeen Police Department's headquarters. Oliver was still in the Bell County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bond.
