Sprint Call Center in Temple Will Lay Off 165 Employees This Fall
The Sprint call center on Eberhardt Road in Temple will lay off 165 employees this fall.
In a letter sent to the Texas Workforce Commission in August, Sprint human resources manager Renee Finks said the layoffs are permanent with no right to recall. The layoffs are part of decision by Sprint to cut 800 jobs nationwide, including 384 in Texas. Sprint cites a decrease in customer calls as the reason for cutting jobs.
Employees have been offered severance packages based on tenure with the company according to Sprint spokeswoman Jennifer Schuler, who says terminations will be effective either September 6 or October 4. The Temple call center will not close, she said.
Since opening in 2001, facility has been named one of Sprint’s top performing call centers nationwide. The center added 100 employees in 2010 as advances were made in the company’s 4G network. According to the Temple Economic Development Corp., Sprint currently employs an estimated 1,000 people at the call center.
