Queen Sugar and Ava Duvernay fans are jumping for joy this week as the Oprah Winfrey Network confirmed that the hit drama series has secured a third season. The Wrinkle in Time director is staying put at OWN, and has expanded her deal with Oprah Winfrey in a first-look deal with Harpo Films, which co-produces Queen Sugar and is also on board DuVernay's recently announced Netflix limited series Central Park Five.

"I love, love, love the work we have been able to create so far. I am looking forward to developing many more meaningful projects together." said Winfrey in a recent statement.  Queen Sugar's renewal comes as no surprise to most. The show regularly ranks among the top most-watched series on cable and continues to bring critical acclaim.

But the timing of Harpo Films' deal with Ava Duvurnay comes at an auspicious moment since Tyler Perry recently announced a new deal at Viacom that will take him away from OWN in 2019. Although his shows will stay on the network through 2020, Perry's content has been a major draw for viewers to OWN since he and Winfrey partnered in 2012.

However, OWN seems to be on a roll partnering with prolific black power-houses. Just 24 hours before news of DuVernay's deal, producer Will Packer announced his first-look TV deal at OWN. Also, just last week, Being Mary Jane producers Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil announced their series order with the network for a new drama called Love Is__.

Season 2 of Queen Sugar currently airs on OWN regularly Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET.
