Michelle Hurst, known for her role as Miss Claudette in the Netflix original series 'Orange Is the New Black,' is recovering from a serious car accident. She finally awoke from a medically-induced coma after 16 days.

Her injuries were so major that doctors induced the coma so that they could avoid movement and perform risky surgeries close to Hurst's spine. Yikes. It sounds like the accident was really bad.

Hurst regained consciousness on Thursday (Jan. 16). The accident occurred right before the holidays. The actress remains in ICU at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital in North Carolina.

A fundraising page has been set up to help defray her medical costs. The goal of $5,000 has been met and beyond exceeded, as over $11,000 has been raised. The donation site is here.

Season 2 of the insanely popular series is set to debut in mid 2014. It's not yet clear if and how the accident will affect the actress' role on the show for the second season. But that's secondary as she embarks on recovery.

PopCrush sends our very best out to Hurst as she continues her recovery.
