Marvin Gaye was one of the greatest performers in the history of recorded music, but to really appreciate his voice, you’ve got to hear him sing a capella.

In this incredible video posted to Reddit’s /r/videos board Wednesday by user bluestblue, an isolated voice track of Gaye performing “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” is synched with footage of a television performance by the artist. Without musical accompaniment, the song seems to strike an even more soulful chord than the familiar version from 1968’s ‘In The Groove’.

Give it a listen and let us know what you think!

(Gaye begins his performance around the 19 second mark.)
