Killeen police say a man who slashed his own throat after fleeing from an officer died early Wednesday morning at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center.

37-year-old Jackie Lee Brollier III was pronounced dead shortly before 1 a.m. According to a press released issued Thursday, his cause of death was listed as "an incised wound of the neck".

Brollier was stopped by an officer for a traffic violation around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday night. He pulled his motorcycle into the parking lot of the Texas Thrift Store at the intersection of Veteran's Memorial Blvd and South W.S. Young Drive, then fled on foot when the officer exited his patrol car. The chase ended in a nearby field when the suspect turned to face the officer and began slashing at his throat with a sharp object.

The officer tased Brollier to stop him from furthering injuring himself and requested backup and an ambulance. He then tried to subdue Brollier and render aid, but Brollier resisted. Once backup arrived, Brollier was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke ordered Brollier's remains sent to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy. Investigators are working to determine why Brollier fled and a possible motive for his suicide.
