The KISD Board of Trustees will vote Tuesday night on a policy allowing absences for students relating to deployments of family members.
The policy will set guidelines for excused absences for students if the absence is related to the deployment or return to active duty of a parent, stepparent, or legal guardian.
Certain conditions would be in place under the new policy. The deployment must be outside the locality of residence, must be at least four continuous months, and the absence must be taken no more than 60 days before or 30 days after the return from deployment. Excused absences would be limited to five days.
The district currently does not have a policy regarding deployment-related absences. Over half of the students enrolled in the 2012-13 school year have military family members.
Any policy changes approved by the board will take effect for the 2013-14 school year.
