Killeen Approves Funds for Homeless Shelter

Killeen City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday approved to grant $500,000 from federal funding to a project to build a general-use homeless shelter.

The project was among the top three priorities for the $1.6 million allotted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for nonprofits helping the needy in Killeen.

The project was submitted by Families in Crisis Inc., a nonprofit which provides shelter for victims of domestic and sexual violence.

The project is expected to begin in October, when the money is awarded, with completion estimated at March 2015.

The plan calls for the renovation of a 9,000 square foot building. The shelter will be an overnight shelter with capacity for 70. Total building renovation costs are estimated at $1 million.
