Today is the day that we remember the men and women who died while serving in a branch of the United States armed forces. It was originally known as Decoration Day after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in that war. Every year on the last Monday in May is Memorial Day and it is the kick off to summer and vacation season.

I am a member of a military family. My grandfather served in the Navy during World War II, my father was an Airman in the Air Force who flew planes in the Vietnam War.

I served during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a YN in the United States Navy and my husband also served in the United States Navy during the Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Fortunately for my family, no one lost their lives or was injured while under the oath to protect and serve the United States. We count it as a blessing.

Today, we take time to remember those who lost their lives while protecting and serving this great country. Some confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. Veterans Day is a day of celebrating the service of all United States military.

The difference is one celebrates those who have died while serving and the other is for their service, living or dead.
