There has been many female artists who found greater success outside of their original girl group. There's Missy Elliott, Beyonce and Tinashe, for example. Melanie Fiona is another. The Canadian songstress turns 32 years old (July 4).

Fiona was originally part of the girl trio X-Quisite. Although the group got nominated for Canada's Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year in 2004, the group didn't have longterm success and disbanded in 2005.

Fiona moved on to become part of another group called The Renaissance with a then unknown rapper named Drake. That also didn't work out, but while Drizzy went on to become a rap superstar, Fiona pursued her own solo career.

In 2009, the R&B songstress released her solo debut album, The Bridge, which features the hit "It Kills Me." The song also garnered her first Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 2012, Fiona won two Grammy Awards for Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B Song for "Fool for You," her duet with CeeLo Green.

Fiona is currently working on her third album Awake. It'll be her first independent release. "It is about being present and being awake. It's what I feel like I've experienced from the second project, The MF Life, up to now," she told BET. "It's not just music. It's a way of thinking and a way of life. It's about honoring each moment, good or bad, because with everything that's happened from 2012 to now, I've grown so much."
