Funk icon George Clinton has been delivering the funk to fans worldwide for decades. But the Parliament/Funkadelic frontman plans to put down the mic after years of touring around the world.

In a statement to Billboard, Clinton announced that he’s retiring from the stage in May 2019.

"This has been coming a long time,” he said. “Anyone who has been to the shows over the past couple of years has noticed that I’ve been out front less and less.”

Although the 76-year-old funkateer recently had a pacemaker surgically implanted, he insists that his health did not play a factor in his decision to retire.

“Truth be told, it’s never really been about me," he says. "It’s always been about the music and the band. That’s the real P-Funk legacy. They’ll still be funkin’ long after I stop.”

For those saddened by the news, don't fret. You have a year to see the funk legend in action. He and his touring band have over 50 dates scheduled from now until New Year's Eve. To find out if he's coming to a city near you, head over to GeorgeClinton.com.

George Clinton is also working on a new album tentatively titled Medicaid Fraud Dog. The set's first single is called “I’m Gon Make You Sick O’Me” featuring Scarface.
