Founders: What Was the Undergroud Railroad?
I find it very disturbing that most of today's youth have no idea what the Underground Railroad was. Most of today's youth have no clue of Black History either. To make matters worse, we had a Real Housewife of Atlanta, whose grandfather was apart of the Civil Rights movement, think the Underground Railroad was an actual train system. This is so sad.
The Underground Railroad was a network of safe houses and secret routes the
19th century slaves used to escape to freedom. It is believed that the height of the Underground Railroad was reached between 1850 and 1860 and that 100,000 had escaped to freedom in 1850 alone.
The most popular person associated with the Underground Railroad was a brave lady by the name of Harriett Tubman. It is believed she made 13 trips aiding more than 70 slaves to freedom.
