Universal and Legendary unleashed the first 'Dracula Untold' trailer unto the world, riffing a bit on our current superhero-obsessed culture while showing off Luke Evans as the iconic vampire Dracula. But this isn't really the Bram Stoker story we've all come to know and love -- this is more like a prequel story with hat tips to 'Batman' and 'The Mummy.'

Evans' character is Vlad Tepes, the historical figure on whom the legend of Dracula is based, and the 'Dracula Untold' trailer previews his story of tapping into dark powers to save his family, even at the cost of his own humanity. It's made clear he's not the hero the world needs, despite how the initial posters tapped into the juice of 'Batman Begins.' Once he drinks the blood of a vamper dwelling in a dark cave atop a tall mountain (you know how these origin stories go), he becomes the Prince of Darkness with powers that rival Imhotep in the 'Mummy' franchise -- instead of a tidal wave of sand, Dracula can command a tidal wave of bats.

Supporting the cast of 'Dracula Untold' are Dominic Cooper (aka Howard Stark from the Marvel films), Charlie Cox (our new Daredevil in the upcoming Netflix series), Sarah Gadon ('Enemy') and a bunch of characters from popular TV series you'll recognize, including Zach McGowan from 'Shameless' and Paul Kaye from 'Game of Thrones.'

'Dracula Untold' hits theaters this October 17.
