The preliminary results of an autopsy reveal the cause of death of a 3-year-old boy and 27-year-old man in Temple over the weekend.

According to Bell County Justice of the Peace Ted Duffield, a report from the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas indicates that both the boy and the adult suffered gunshot wounds to the head. One victim's death was ruled a homicide, and the other a suicide.

Police have identified the child as 3-year-old Leonardo Martinez. The adult victim was identified as 27-year-old Santiago Jasso.

Investigators believe Jasso mishandled a firearm and accidentally shot the child, after which he took his own life.

Police now say Martinez's mother drove him to Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center shortly before 3:25 AM Saturday, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Temple police were called to the medical center for a welfare check, and upon their arrival were informed by the boy's mother of another shooting victim, later identified as Jasso, in the 4700 block of Midway Drive.

Police continued to investigate the situation Tuesday afternoon.
