Danny Brown Responds to French Montana’s ‘Lyrical Rappers’ Comment

Rapper French Montana's claim that "All lyrical rappers I know are broke" from his recent interview with Power 105.1's Angie Martinez has not gone over well within the hip-hop community. One of Montana's most vocal critics has been Danny Brown, who boasted about his success as a "lyrical" rapper on Twitter as word of Montana's opinion spread.

In an interview with REVOLT, the Detroit rapper spoke on the topic at his video shoot for his single 'Smokin N Drinkin.'

"If we want to make [rap] progress in the future, the best way to look at it is not to tell somebody you don't have to be good at it to succeed at it," Brown explained.

The 'Dope Song' rapper asserted that artists with the most successful and long-lasting careers have a lyrical backbone in their music while those without it have fleeting prosperity in the industry.

"I feel like the better you are as a rapper, the more you succeed," he said. "There's a lot of people who made a good song here and there, but most of the careers you saw in rap music was by good rappers."

Brown's biggest concern with Montana's statement is how he feels it make effect the next generation of potential rappers.

"If I was 16 years old, that's the last thing you should probably tell me," Brown stated. "Because I wanted to be a rapper at 16. If you told me I didn't have to be lyrical, then I probably wouldn't have tried to be lyrical."
