Amber Cherie Newton was stopped by police Saturday for driving after dark with no headlights. Police found drugs in the vehicle and learned that she’d left her 3-year-old child alone in their apartment.

According to The Killeen Daily Herald's Josh Sullivan, Newton was arrested and taken to the Coryell County Jail on charges of abandonment of a child with intent to return, possession of a controlled substance 1 gram or more, possession of a controlled substance between 3 grams and 28 grams and organized retail theft.

The child was found in a nearby apartment unharmed and had been left alone for about 3 hours before being released to a family member by Copperas Cove police. Newton is being held on a $20,000 bond and faces over $700 in fines.
