Police are investigating after a badly burned body was discovered along a road just west of Belton Monday afternoon.

Alex Cano with our news partner, KWTX-TV, reports that Belton firefighters responded to a brush fire off FM 1670 near U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14 around 8 AM Monday. They returned to the scene of the fire around Noon after the flames were reportedly rekindled and discovered the burned remains.

Bell County Sheriff's Department spokesman T.J. Cruz said foul play is suspected.

The Temple Daily Telegram's Deborah McKeon reports that police have dubbed the property in the 1600 block of FM 1670 "The Compound"due to known drug activity there. Authorities towed a car parked in a vacant lot near the scene, which Cruz said might be tied to the case.
