Belton City Council Votes to Change Street Name
The Belton City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to rename West Ninth Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
The City Council’s vote came after a proposal submitted by Belton’s African American Churches United, with support from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, successfully garnered the written consent of over 70 percent of voting property owners along the street.
Concerns were raised by two representatives of Belton’s Chishholm Trail Senior Village about seniors who support an MLK road but worry about the impact of a change of address. City Council members assured residents that measures will be taken to help them with the change.
Per city policy, the organizations responsible for submitting a request for the renaming will cover the costs of replacing street signs. The new signs will be installed by the city’s public works department and the Texas Department of Transportation.
